Overview

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth remains an iconic vehicle in the world of performance cars. Born out of Ford's rallying prowess, this hot hatchback became an instant classic, combining a distinctive rally-inspired design with impressive power and handling capabilities.

This particular car has been modified by world-renowned Cosworth specialist, Romain Oppliger, owner of Oppliger Motorsports. His attention to detail is unmatched and the quality of this build is evident throughout the vehicle. Not much has been left untouched with an estimated total for this build coming in at $50,000+.

The aggressively stanced Escort is a boxy beauty adorned with a distinctive rear spoiler and flared wheel arches, giving the car a purposeful appearance. The whale-tail spoiler not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also serves a functional purpose by providing increased downforce at high speeds. The flawless white paint resembles an early motorsport version before team liveries were applied to the factory-backed rally cars. At each corner of the car are white Compomotive TH wheels, and tucked under them is a Tarox Big Brake kit which allows the car to stop on a dime. Intrax suspension and a complete Powerflex bushing kit keep things tidy under heavy cornering.

Under the hood, you’ll find a comprehensive list of modifications, with each part complementing the entire build. What you end up with is a robust platform that is capable of being driven hard. Some of the highlights include a Borg Warner EFR 7670, a T4 stainless steel and ceramic coated exhaust manifold, a forged bottom end, an ECUMaster ECU, a larger intercooler, and a radiator with silicon hoses. The car was dyno-tuned in Denver, Colorado with Steve Sampier of Divulge Motorsports, and makes 420 horsepower to the wheel (550 horsepower at the crank).

You'll have the option to increase power to 650 at the wheel -- an astonishing 765 hp at the crank. The increased power requires switching to flex fuel along with upgrading the fuel pump and injectors..

Inside the cabin, the Escort RS Cosworth offers a driver-centric environment. Racing-inspired Recaro bucket seats, a three-spoke Sparco steering wheel and pedals, and a performance-oriented instrument cluster with an indigo-blue glow create an immersive driving experience. A red kill switch allows for quick emergency shut off and next to it are two small switches. One allows the use of a fan for auxiliary fan cooling and the other, which we’ll call the fun switch, enables anti-lag. The interior design reflects a perfect balance between functionality and comfort, ensuring that the driver feels connected to the car at all times.

History & Maintenance

Previous ownership of this iconic Ford was in Luxemburg. The former owner, Hans Wilhalm, selected Oppliger Motorsports to source the car and complete an extensive build, targeting at least 550 HP. The initial build included upgraded suspension, braking and a stand-alone ECU. The motor and gearbox were both overhauled at Oppliger’s facility in Italy in 2021 and the car has covered about 500 miles since the rebuild. Once the build was complete Hannes drove the car and determined it was too powerful and he decided to sell it.

The car was then sold to the current owner who resides in central Tennessee. Cult Cars was responsible for purchasing and importing the car. The current owner acquired a total of 3 Escort Cosworth’s in 2022. He is selling this one to make room for an ex-works WRC spec Escort that’s currently being reconditioned by Oppliger Motorsports. In October 2023 the car was shipped to Denver, Colorado where it currently resides at Cult Cars until it finds a new home. In the coming weeks Steve Sampier, the owner of Divulge Performance, will be dyno-tuning this Cossi for maximum power and reliability. Stay tuned for a complete report!

Heritage

In the early 1990s, rally racing gave birth to a plethora of high-tech, turbocharged machines, especially from the Japanese, with cars like the Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru STI, and Toyota Celica GT-Four. The Escort RS Cosworth was Europe’s way of
fighting back.

The car was just as high-tech as its Asian rivals, except it had a Ford badge, which made it appear like a genuine home-team effort for European fans. This version of the Escort was, of course, not sold in America, nor was rally racing as popular
west of the Atlantic Ocean. But in Europe, it was the textbook definition of “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.”

Interior                  A

Interior is in excellent condition with no tears or stains. All switches and controls work as they should. There is no radio or air conditioning

Exterior                A+

Exterior is in phenomenal condition, the vehicle has been professionally ceramic coated and the paint surface is flawless. There are no scratches, dents, cracks or rust on the vehicle.

Mechanical         A+

The vehicle operates as it should and does so nicely. Power comes on strong and the steering is tight. A few rattles here and there, but that is to be expected of a car like this.

Photographer's notes

This car is gorgeous in person and easily the coolest example I’ve come across. The mods are tastefully done and nothing over the top every mod has a purpose on this car. I couldn’t see any blemishes worth noting. Handling is tight and responsive. The brakes are quite touchy and grip hard. The turbo lag is noticeable, but once the power comes on you better be ready. Simply flip the small toggle switch next to the shift knob to engage ALS and enjoy the pops and bangs of driving a straight-up rally car (I wouldn’t recommend this in a densely populated area or in your neighborhood). Turbo lag is almost non existent when engaged. This car draws a ton of attention as well as thumbs ups. A really cool and unique car with a blend of rally history and performance.
