2019 fiat 124 spider Abarth

T-5R don't hit the market very often. When they emerge they tend to be garage queens or clapped-out daily drivers.

HIGHLIGHTS

Handling is just as you’d expect, crisp and responsive. Bilstein dampers and upgraded springs keep the car planted in the twisties while midrange turbo response is ideal for passing and zipping around town.

The interior is compact and easy to navigate. The soft top operates without electronic gizmos to go wrong. Simply unclip the roof at the rearview mirror position then fling it back behind you then latch it in place. This car was meant to be driven with the top down, and it feels open and airy. A 7” infotainment touchscreen is mated to Bose speakers, but we think the audio track you’ll enjoy most is the Abarth specific exhaust system. Fire up the engine and it’s the first thing you hear – a distinctive rumble that rewards you every time the accelerator hits the floor!

The 124 features a lot of nice touches and feels like an upgrade over its Miata cousin — certain trim bits and the door panels are restyled, the meaty steering wheel offers positive grip and feels great, and the seat’s ribbed inserts are reminiscent of the bucket seats you’d find in a vintage racer. The red tachometer also adds a nice flare to the interior. We’re excited to offer this fun summer roadster in a very rare and irresistible shade of blue.

GALLERY

Based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata platform, the Fiat 124 Spider blends Italian style and Japanese engineering to create a perfect roadster for top-down touring. Styling inspiration borrows from the original 124 last seen in the 1960’s and, but the Abarth has a more aggressive stance with gunmetal accents. Power is derived from a 1.4 liter turbo four-cylinder motor producing 164 hp and 184 ft lbs of torque. This engine uses Fiat's MultiAir electro-hydraulic variable valve-timing system, which exercises such precise control that the engine has no throttle plate. Instead, when you step on the accelerator, it's the intake valves themselves that control how much air gets into the engine.

History

This vehicle was originally purchased in New Mexico and covered approximately 4,500 before it was acquired by the current owner, who methodically searched for the lowest mileage example in Mare Blue Metallic. Due to recent foot surgery the current owner has not been able to drive and enjoy the car. We believe this to be one of the lowest mileage examples available for sale. The car has always been garage kept and is sold with a clean car fax, recent oil change and covering just 250 miles under the current ownership.

heritage

The original Fiat 124 Sport Spider arrived in 1966 and was not originally conceived by Fiat management for motorsport use. Nevertheless, the agile, Pininfarina-penned car was quickly adopted by privateer drivers and considered to be ideal for rally racing. Little by little, Fiat officially entered the rallying arena and progressively developed the 124 Group 4 rally car with support from Abarth. Eventually the nimble Fiat clinched the European Rally Championship in 1972 and 1975.

photographer's notes

This Fiat is basically brand new and it shows. The car is a joy to drive and is actually quite spacious for its size. It sounds great with the raspy exhaust note. Steering is responsive and you feel planted through turns. There is one scratch shown in the photos on the rear passenger side of the bumper. No other dents or scratches are present.

The drop-top is easy to deploy and is in great condition. Highway cruising is doable and isn’t overly windy or loud. The interior is immaculate and there are no signs of wear or tear. The brief time I spent with the car was pleasant and the car got a lot of looks. Sport mode is fun and zippy and the paddles shift crisply. The paint on this car is gorgeous, the color shifts depending on the light, and the metallic flakes really add depth to the overall look of the car.
